Top Christmas Toys 2008 - Will the Credit Crunch Be the Scrooge This Christmas
October 24, 2008
15th October, The Toy Retailer Association, GAINSBOROUGH released the eagerly anticipated list of dream toys for 2008. As in previous years, this list forms the basis of those toys that are expected to be in high demand for the Christmas period, alerting retailers, consumers and pretty much anybody involved in the buying and selling of toys at Christmas, that it is time to act now.
However, with the doom and gloom over the last few months with the UK economy along with what must be the most overused term in 2008, the ‘Credit Crunch‘, how will this affect the spending patterns of the user, with the knock on effect to the retailers. The list this year comprised of toys ranging from the £20-30 mark up to £200-300, so who does this affect?
Well those that are taking the sensible approach will see some light at the end of the tunnel with being able to get some of the most awaited toys for 2008 for £20 or £30, but will this affect the sales of some of the higher priced goods? Our assumption is that it won’t. We base this fact from what we have seen with one of our sites that promotes Kota the Triceratops from Playskool. Kota was only released a few weeks back and with prices fluctuating between £225-300+, retailers such as Amazon.co.uk, John Lewis, Argos and the Toyshop have taken this on board, strategically pricing this product to a level at which the consumer will buy. This has worked so well in fact that Amazon.co.uk are currently out of stock and awaiting the next supply to continue selling this highly rated product for this Christmas and we are still only in October.
Other products that are likely to follow a similar pattern are Fur Real Biscuit from Hasbro and the recent release of the Sesame Street character Elmo Live from the people at Fisher Price. Early signs suggest that these will prove to be bestsellers this Christmas, lets hope the supplies can keep up with the demand, unlike the fate of the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS Lite last year.
So are people going to let the Credit Crunch be the Scrooge this Christmas?
Well in not in our view, no, but with the popularity of Cashback sites, spending money this Christmas will be aided by receiving money back on your online purchases.
